North and South piers of Pavilosta
Pāvilosta, Dienvidkurzemes novads
In the winter of 1878, the German baron Otto Friedrich von Lilienfeld started the construction of two parallel piers - North and South - at his own expense. The original port gate was made of rows of piles and piles of stones covered with juniper branches. Women were also employed in stone stacking work. In 1929, the piers were extended with concrete blocks. The length of the channel is 950m. However, the narrow entrance of the channel (52m) and the piers built in parallel make it difficult for larger ships to move. During the Soviet years, when the piers were monitored by border guards, walking along them was prohibited. Such prohibitions no longer exist, but the pile of stones had become dangerous for walking under the influence of storms and ice.
