Pavilosta Gray dune
The widest grey dune in Latvia – stretching 1.5 km along the sea, and 812 meters from the sea inland. It is a Natura 2000 area. Covering an area of 42.5 hectares, it was established in 2007 to protect particularly valuable habitats: grey dunes covered with herbaceous plants, grey dunes with dwarf shrub communities, forested coastal dunes, sandy coastal plain heathlands, and the conservation of specially protected species living there.
Together with the sea, the town's historic buildings, and EU-protected habitats, including pine forests, embryonic and fore dunes, and the rare wet beach with springs, they form a unique and unified coastal landscape.
The beach is adjacent to the widest grey dune in Latvia. It is most beautiful in the second half of July and in August when the grey dune is painted in yellow-violet shades during the flowering of marsh grass and tufted hairgrass. A two-story observation platform has been created for viewing the dune. Area: 42.5 ha.
