The church was founded in 1597. The first stone building could have been built in the 17th century. the end. There are graves under the church, which were filled in 1841, when the Vērgale church was rebuilt. 1985 the church is being demolished. Newly built in 1992. Graves surround the church. The words "We couldn't have done otherwise..." are engraved on a tombstone. Every Vergalian will know how to tell you the tragic story about the lovers - the son of Baron Štempelis and the servant girl Anna Lazdiņa. They died in 1912 by shooting themselves, because the prejudices of the times did not allow them to be together in this sun. They chose to die together, leaving a posthumous letter requesting that they be buried in the same grave.
