Vecpils mound
A mound covered with trees is located across the road directly opposite Vecpils St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church (1700). Research shows that in the 13th century this place is mentioned as Mārkaiš (Merķes) castle - one of the strongest Curonian castles, fortified with a system of ditches and embankments, which has survived to this day. The castle was burned down in 1263, when the brothers of the Livonian Order took revenge on the Curses for the loss in the battle of Durbe.
Nowadays, there is a cemetery on the palace square, where burials are no longer carried out.
