The entrance of the Pape channel to the sea
Pape nature park is one of the best places in Latvia for bird watching. In autumn and spring, thousands of migratory birds and bats use the strip along Pape lake and the sea as a migration route (Baltic - Baltic Sea migratory bird route). What species are found in Pape? When is the best time to watch? Find out here!
A good place for birdwatching is at the mouth of the Pape channel into the sea.
The 1.77 km long Pape Canal connects Lake Pape with the Baltic Sea. To get to the mouth of the canal from the village of Pape, you have to go along the Pape canal towards the sea. The mouth of the canal can also be reached by going from the Pape lighthouse. Both in the village of Pape and at the lighthouse of Pape there is a parking lot for parking a car.
"Thanks to the lake, the birds in Pape are directed to a narrow strip of about 1 km between the sea and the lake. During the peak of migration, at the end of September - October, on certain days the birds flow continuously in a stream. The main mass is made up of only a few species - finches, titmice, goldfinches, warblers, etc., but many, many other species move along with them. The stream of small birds is followed by sparrow hawks, large flocks of country pigeons and geese often move above..." Learn more about the experience and observations of ornithologists in Pape here!
