The pebbly beach of Nida
On the beach near the village of Nida, you can see the uncharacteristic for Latvia pebbly wall of the ancient Litorina coast and the sediments of the ancient Nida marsh.
The wall was created by the receding of the Litorina Sea. It is 25-30 m wide, 0.5 m high. Part of the Nida marsh is partially buried under the coastal embankment, but its sediments (peat) extend a little into the sea. Remains of diatoms living in salt water were found in the peat in the land part.
This is a protected area with a total area of 37.1 ha. Milk quartz pebbles are found here.
