According to the Rhymed Chronicle, during the Crusaders' campaign to Courland in 1261, the Crusaders besieged the Dzintare Castle, which was defended by Samogitian mercenaries, during the Battle of Dzintare. They set fire to the wood piled in the defensive ditch. All the castle defenders who refused to surrender perished in the flames.
The attackers killed all the defenders, including boys older than eleven, women who refused to beg for their lives, and even children. The conquest of these lands and the massacres of the inhabitants were carried out on the orders of Bishop Albert, executed by the Sword Brothers Order.
The hillfort is located at the confluence of the Tebre and Grāpste rivers, near the Aizpute–Apriķi–Pāvilosta road.
