A bicycle and a boat are useful things for traveling through the countryside and waterways.

The most suitable rivers for boating in the vicinity of Priekule are Vārtāja, a tributary of the right bank of Bārta in South Kurzeme. The longest tributaries are Virga (29 km) and Birztala (25 km). The largest settlements on the coast are Krote, Bunka and Krūte.

Even though the Vārtājas river is no longer as wide or deep as it was in Curonian times, both boaters and cyclists can still enjoy the wonderful scenery of the ancient Vārtājas valley. There are quite a lot of gravel roads with beautiful scenery and little traffic around Priekule suitable for their travels.
