Ālande River Walking Trail

The trail winds along the bends of the Ālande River through modern-day Grobiņa. Throughout the entire route, informational stands provide insights into Grobiņa's historical stories. Along the way, you can see the Grobiņa Hillfort, the ancient town, and old burial grounds. Grobiņa, referred to by settlers as Seeburg (Sea Castle or Lake Castle), is the first inhabited place in Latvia mentioned in written sources. It was already inhabited during the Stone Age, and by the early 1st century AD, Grobiņa became a center of the Western Baltic tribe, the Curonians. Until the 9th century, Grobiņa was a large, well-known town-like settlement of Curonians and Vikings.
The park and walking trail are suitable for walking, cycling, as well as convenient for parents with strollers and people with mobility impairments. The Ālande River Park can also be enjoyed by boat along the Ālande River route.
