Aizpute Livonian Order Castle Ruins
The construction of the Livonian Order (Ordensburg Hasenpoth) castle-type fortress began in the 13th century under Order Master Dītrihs von Groningens. Originally, the castle had a forecourt, corner towers, and wooden buildings in the courtyard. It served as a border fortification at the meeting point of the Livonian Order and the Bishopric of Courland territories. In the 15th century, a residential building with cellars and a gallery was added to the eastern wall of the castle. In the courtyard above the gates, some decorative plasterwork in the sgraffito technique has partially survived. The castle was still inhabited in the 1970s until it was destroyed by a fire.
