“Paplakas Disneyland,” as it is called by the locals of Virga parish, is perhaps the most unusual playground in Latvia – a miniature medieval fortress built from stones, with towers, underground passages, and bridges. It is located on the site of a former military base that was once only accessible to Soviet army personnel.

Today, it is hard to imagine, but during the Soviet era, not far from the playground stood a seven-story residential building for the families of the garrison officers, many of whom had children. Since the military families and their offspring lived in a rather closed-off area, a playground was built where local Paplakas children were not allowed to play.

The military base no longer exists, but several traces of its military history remain. A guided tour of the Priekule and Paplakas garrison is available.
