The Priekule Manor House and Guard Tower
Aizputes iela 1, Priekule, Dienvidkurzemes novads
The Priekule Manor House of the Barons Korff was built in the second half of the 18th century. In the second half of the 19th century, the manor house was rebuilt according to a design by Liepāja's chief architect Paul Max Bertschy (1840–1911). It was during this period that a guard tower was also constructed nearby. During World War II, both the manor house and the tower were destroyed.
The manor house was restored after the war, while the tower regained its original appearance only during the Latvian National Awakening in the 1990s. The manor house now houses Priekule Secondary School, and the guard tower, with the Latvian flag atop its mast, has become a symbol of the country's restored independence and a gathering place for Priekule residents during Latvian Republic celebrations.
