Embūte Church ruins
Embūte, Embūtes pagasts, Dienvidkurzemes novads
Embūte Cultural Monument. The church was built from 1674 to 1684, financed by the then-owner of the manor, Emmerich von Mirbach. The Embūte Lutheran Church was one of the largest in the Duchy of Courland, with 300 seats. During the period of the Republic, thousands of people gathered here, including prominent state figures, with Kārlis Ulmanis at the forefront.
The church was notable for its wood carvings inside. During World War I, the church was not damaged. It housed a huge crystal chandelier. In 1926, the church was renovated, but at the end of World War II, it was destroyed. Only the walls and the bell tower remain, where traces of artillery shell impacts can still be seen.
