Memorial Stele of the Knights of the Order of Lāčplēsis
The Latvian War of Independence, also known as the Latvian Liberation War, was the struggle for an independent Latvian state, from its proclamation on November 18, 1918, to the signing of the Latvian-Russian peace treaty on August 11, 1920. It was a time when the Latvian desire for an independent state was so great that it managed to defeat the oppressors of the state in fierce battles.
The memorial stele of the Knights of the Order of Lāčplēsis is created as a tribute to the heroes of the War of Independence. The plaque is dedicated to the Knights of the Order of Lāčplēsis born in the Nīca and Pērkone regions. Eleven Knights of the Order of Lāčplēsis were born in the Nīca region. Their names, order rank, birth and death dates are engraved on the stele. It is a gift for Latvia's centenary.
The project to install granite steles in the districts where the Knights of the Order of Lāčplēsis were born was implemented by the Youth Guard and Information Center with the project "Remember the Lāčplēsis!" In honor of the soldiers who fell in the Latvian War of Independence, identical memorial steles are being installed throughout Latvia.
